What is the TSIA2?

The Texas Success Initiative Assessment 2.0 (TSIA2) is a series of placement tests for students enrolling in public colleges and universities in Texas. The tests help Texas schools determine whether you’re ready for college-level courses in the areas of reading, writing, and math.

The TSI Assessment (TSIA2) is aligned to the Texas College and Career Readiness Standards and offers both placement testing as well as detailed diagnostic profiles of students’ college readiness and/or adult basic education levels. If you’re not ready for college-level courses, the tests help determine what types of courses or intervention will best prepare you for college-level work.

Who needs to take the TSIA2?

The TSIA2 is required for all 11th and 12th grade students who want to take Dual Credit in high school. Students can also choose to take the TSIA2 test to meet CCMR requirements for high school and/or meet college entrance requirements for post-secondary education.  Your TSIA2 scores are valid for up to five years from the time you take the test, so high school students can take the test as early as their sophomore year if they are wanting to meet the CCMR requirements for off-campus lunch or dual credit courses for their 11th grade year.

How long is the TSIA2?

The TSIA2 Assessment is an untimed test. The test publisher estimates that most students will take about four hours to complete both sections.

How much does it cost to take the TSIA2?

The cost for the TSIA2 is $10 for ELAR and $10 for Math.  $20 for both the ELAR and Math sections.

How do I know if I “passed” the TSIA2?

Scores are usually available immediately after testing. Sometimes, the essay score is delayed for grading, and a complete score report is available the next business day. The scores that indicate college readiness (“passing”) are:

ELAR

A score of 945 or higher with an essay score of 5 or higher

OR

A score of 944 or lower with a diagnostic score of 5 or higher AND an essay score of 5 or higher

Math

A score of 950 or higher

OR

A score of 949 or lower with a diagnostic score of 6.

Am I exempt from taking the TSIA2 if I took the SAT or ACT tests?

A high school student can be exempt from the TSIA2 or parts of the TSIA2 if they meet one of the requirements below:

ELAR

A student can be exempt from the ELAR portion of the TSIA2 with:

A SAT Reading score of 480 or higher

OR

An ACT composite score of 23 with a minimum of 19 on the English portion of the test.

Math

A student can be exempt from the Math portion of the TSIA2 with:

A SAT Math score of 530 or higher

OR

An ACT composite score of 23 with a minimum of 19 on the Math portion of the test.

It is ALWAYS best practice to check with the individual univeristy or college to determine requirements for college entrance.

What does being “TSI Complete” mean?

Being “TSI complete” means that you have met TSI college readiness standards in both ELAR and Math by taking and passing the TSIA2 with the scores identified above OR meet TSI exemption standards by meeting benchmark standards on the SAT or ACT as identified above.  Taking a College Bridge Course allows you to meet TSI requirements for CCMR criteria for high school, but does not necessarily meet “TSI Complete” standards for college entrance.  It is important that you check with the individual college or university to which you are applying to determine if they will accept College Bridge courses as being “TSI Complete”.
