The PSAT/NMSQT (Preliminary SAT/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test) is a valuable standardized test offered once a year in the fall to our 10th and 11th-grade students. Co-sponsored by the College Board and the National Merit Scholarship Corporation, it serves two important purposes:

    1. National Merit Scholarship Qualification: For juniors (11th graders), the PSAT/NMSQT is the official qualifying test for the prestigious National Merit Scholarship Program, which can lead to significant academic recognition and scholarship opportunities.

    2. SAT Practice: For both sophomores (10th graders) and juniors, the PSAT/NMSQT acts as an excellent practice test for the SAT. Its similar structure helps students become familiar with the format, question types, and content, preparing them for future college entrance exams.

Taking the PSAT/NMSQT is a smart way for students to assess their college readiness, gain valuable test-taking experience, and open doors to potential scholarships.

The ASVAB (Armed Services Vocational Aptitude Battery) is a multiple-aptitude test battery that measures developed abilities and helps predict future academic and occupational success. While often associated with military enlistment, it's also an excellent tool for career exploration for all students.

Here's what you need to know about the ASVAB:

    • For Career Exploration: The ASVAB provides valuable insights into your strengths and potential career paths, both civilian and military. It assesses your knowledge in various areas like general science, arithmetic reasoning, word knowledge, paragraph comprehension, mathematics knowledge, electronics information, auto and shop information, and mechanical comprehension.

    • For Military Service: If you are considering joining the U.S. Armed Forces (Army, Navy, Air Force, Marine Corps, Coast Guard), taking the ASVAB is a required step. Your scores help determine your eligibility for enlistment and which military occupations (MOS/AFSC/Ratings) you qualify for.

    • No Obligation: Taking the ASVAB at school is completely free and comes with no obligation to join the military. It's simply a resource to help you understand your aptitudes and explore a wide range of career possibilities.

The ASVAB is a fantastic opportunity for students to gain a better understanding of their skills and how they align with various educational and career opportunities after high school.

The PSAT 10 is a standardized test specifically designed for 10th-grade students. As part of the SAT Suite of Assessments, it is offered once a year in the spring to both freshmen and sophomores, and provides a valuable opportunity for students to:

    • Practice for the SAT: The PSAT 10 mirrors the format and content of the SAT, covering Reading, Writing and Language, and Math. Taking this test helps students become familiar with the college entrance exam experience and identify areas where they can focus their studies.

    • Gauge College Readiness: It offers a snapshot of a student's current academic skills and readiness for college-level coursework, providing insights into their strengths and areas for growth.

    • Connect to College Board Resources: Scores from the PSAT 10 link students to personalized study resources on Khan Academy, helping them prepare for future tests and improve their academic skills.

Participating in the PSAT 10 is an excellent way for freshmen and sophomores to build confidence, get a head start on college planning, and understand their academic standing as they progress towards higher education.

  • The Texas Success Initiative Assessment 2.0 (TSIA2) is a series of placement tests for students enrolling in public colleges and universities in Texas. The tests help Texas schools determine whether you’re ready for college-level courses in the areas of reading, writing, and math.

The TSI Assessment (TSIA2) is aligned to the Texas College and Career Readiness Standards and offers both placement testing as well as detailed diagnostic profiles of students’ college readiness and/or adult basic education levels. If you’re not ready for college-level courses, the tests help determine what types of courses or intervention will best prepare you for college-level work.

Accommodations And College Readiness Exams

  • TSI Exempt – Students who have met college readiness benchmarks through SAT or ACT scores are exempt from taking the TSIA2 as a requirement for college entrance. Depending on guidelines established by individual universities/colleges, non-degree seeking students and students who are entering a certification program may be considered TSI exampt as well.
