The PSAT/NMSQT stands for the National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test which students may take their sophomore and/or junior year in October. Advantages to taking the PSAT include:

  1. Familiarizing yourself with the test question and format of the SAT
  2. Providing you with a “dress rehersal” for taking the SAT without colleges seeing your score or considering your score as part of their admission process.
  3. Providing you with results that can be used to guide your test prep for the SAT.

When taken in the junior year of highschool, the PSAT/NMSQT will serve as a qualifying test for the National Merit Scholarship Program.  Juniors who score high enough (usually around 221 or better for the state of Texas) on the PSAT/NMSQT and meet other program requirements could qualify for the National Merit Scholarship Competion.
