August 2018
Welcome to the "Purple Pride Athletic News" newsletter. I hope you are having a great year thus far. This newsletter will be an awesome way to brag about our student athletes, get information out, and to share with people about our program. We would love to fill up several pages about our Warriors, both at the junior high and high school level. The more you send the more exposure our student athletes will get. It's a WIN WIN!
A message from our Athletic Director
Dear Purple Warrior Family,
On behalf of the Bonham ISD Athletic Department, I welcome all students to participate in our interscholastic sports programs. Sports are an excellent way to grow emotionally as an individual. As a product of public school athletics myself, I know that athletics played a major role in helping prepare me for college and the adult world. Because of sports, the lessons of my coaches, and the games I played, I developed skills in time management, problem solving, delegation, motivation, and team building.
Bonham Athletics participate in the UIL (University Interscholastic League) and the TEA (Texas Education Agency). All rules and regulations handed down by these governing bodies will be strictly adhered to at all times. As a member of the Bonham athletic family, our expectations for you are similar to your own family’s expectations. Act responsibly as you represent our school district. Remember that you are an ambassador for everyone who attends our school. How you act and react to situations reflects not only on you, but also on your parents and peers. As a student athlete, you have academic and athletic responsibilities. Study, go to class, practice hard, and do your best to excel. Take pride in the opportunity to represent all of us in a first class manner.
The Bonham Athletic Department’s philosophy is that the student athlete’s pursuits on the field should be equally measured with those off of it. To that end, a Bonham athlete should pursue personal growth through academic work, team experiences, and as an ambassador of our district. You should maintain a sense of ethical responsibility. The athletic department strives to maintain outstanding athletic programs, conducted in a manner that sets an example for good sportsmanship. Our primary concern is the education of the student-athlete. We expect all who choose to participate in our sports programs to be responsible student-athletes. We hope you will take full advantage of this opportunity to get a top-notch high school education while participating in our athletic programs.
Please remember that the coaches and administrators are here for you. Our goal is to help you succeed in your personal and athletic lives.
Go Purple Warriors!

Bonham Warriors season opener
The Bonham Warriors drew first blood, but it was Mount Vernon with a 48-21 win in the season opener.
The Warriors served notice they came to play when quarterback Tyler Rodriguez hit Jerrell Stewart for a long pass-and-run to set up a 12-yard touchdown run by Hayden Stevenson. The PAT gave the Warriors a quick 7-0 lead.
After the teams traded turnovers, the vaunted running game of Mount Vernon hit pay dirt four times to give the Tigers a 28-7 lead.
Another long pass from Rodriguez to Stewart set up the Warriors' second touchdown of the night, this one coming on a short keeper by Rodriguez.
Mount Vernon led 28-14 at the half.
The Tigers stretched their advantage to 40-14 in the third quarter.
Both teams tacked on a TD in the final frame, giving Mount Vernon a 48-21 victory.
Warriors vs. Community
Bonham -- The precipitation held off, but it was raining touchdowns at Warrior Stadium Friday night as the Bonham Warriors overpowered the Community Braves, 42-14.
Bonham head coach John Fish's first home game was one to remember as senior quarterback Tyler Rodriguez ran for three touchdowns and passed for three more TDs, with Noah Shellman on the receiving end of a pair of scoring strikes and Nick Rhinehart grabbing one TD pass.
The Warriors took the opening kickoff and marched into the end zone, with Rodriguez diving over a tackler to give Bonham a quick 6-0 lead. The PAT by Rhinehart made the score 7-0 with 7:33 remaining in the first quarter.
Five minutes later, Community tied the game at 7-7 when quarterback Colby Warren went in from 11 yards out.
An unsuccessful onside kick gave Bonham great field position and the Warriors capitalized 30 seconds later when the offensive line gave Rodriguez time to find Rhinehart all alone over the middle for a 32-yard touchdown pass. The PAT gave the Warriors a 14-7 lead as the opening period ended.
Early in the second stanza, Rodriguez scored on a three-yard keeper to make the score 21-7.
The Braves came close to scoring, but the opportunistic Warrior defense stripped the ball from a Community running back and Bonham pounced on the ball in the end zone for a touchback that ended the threat.
Shellman picked up 25 yards and Rodriguez connected with Shellman for another long gain. Rodriguez, Shellman and Hayden Stevenson all had nice runs to move the chains and give Bonham a first-and-goal at the Community two-yard line. Rodriguez took it the final two yards for his third rushing touchdown of the first half and the Warriors headed to the locker room with a commanding 28-7 advantage.
As the third period got underway, the Braves' offense went three-and-out as a fired up Bonham defense forced a punt and the Warriors' offense went back to work.
Rhinehart picked up 14 yards on an end around. A nice catch by Jerrell Stewart was nullified by a holding penalty, however Rodriguez hit Shellman on a post pattern for 33-yard pick-up. Rodriguez came right back to Shellman for a 12-yard touchdown pass that gave the Warriors a 35-7 lead.
Community managed to narrow the gap to 35-14 with a 10-yard TD pass by Warren, but that turned out to be the Braves' last highlight of the evening.
Rodriguez would hit Shellman for a 15-yard scoring strike in the fourth quarter to finish off an impressive 42-14 win by the Warriors in their home opener.
Chris Wilson was a force in the middle, along with Oscar Delarosa and Daniel Dowling, as the three seniors stuffed the inside running game of the Braves.
Luke Porter, Ryan Robinson, Gaige Cravin and Aidan Straub all had big plays on defense.
Jerrell Stewart, Nick Rhinehart and Noah Shellman all proved to be sure-handed receivers on a damp night and running back Dylan Karl took care of the ball as the Warriors ran out the clock after an exciting home opener.
The Warriors (1-1) will travel to Leonard on September 14, while Community will host Commerce.

L.h. rather Indians scrimmage Celina
7th grade:
Thursday night’s scrimmage against Celina looked very promising for our boys. While we have some work to do to be more efficient, we were able to have some success offensively. Austyn Herrington was able to find a hole behind Benson and Fields and several down field blocks to run for a 35 yard rushing touchdown! Defensively the boys looked ready to make a statement. Our defensive line shut down the inside rush with great vertical pushes which resulted in several tackles for a loss. With Herrington and Hagland at the linebacker position, making big plays as well, The defense was able to keep Celina off the board.
8th Grade
We ran 10 plays on offense against Celina with much success. Jackson Abbott and Cameron Bush were the primary passing targets for the scrimmage. Quarterback Jeren Ross led the attack rushing with over 100 yards rushing. Also running the ball was Canaan Farley. The Indian defense gave a good effort as well. Overall the 8th grade Indians looks very promising in the playmaking ability. This should a be a fun season to watch.

Bonham Lady Indians start their season.
On Thursday, September 6th the Bonham Lady Indians took the court for the first time this season. We started off with the 7th Grade B team. They beat Bells in 2 games winning 25-15, 25-14. Leading servers for the game was Cammie Westbrook with 15 serves, Jazmin Vazquez-Bernal has 12 service points, and Amy Vaughn had 11 service points. Serving and communication is something that we will be focusing on this week.
The 8th grade B team was defeated by Bells in two—25-19 and 16-13. With a 30 minute running clock, they weren’t able to get in 2 full games. Although the score didn’t reflect our efforts, the girls played well. We were actually putting an offense on the court, while Bells was just returning the ball. Clarissa Ibarra had 9 service points, and Avery Rude and Marissa Cox both had 6. Communication and serving are things that we will be working on this next week.
7th grade A team was defeated by Bells in two—25-17 and 25-10. Jolee McMahon had a great dig. Makya High had 6 service points. Lily Englutt and Jolee McMahon had 3 service points each. These girls are working hard, but need to work on passing and communication.
The 8th grade A team had a great game and defeated Bells in two—25-8 and 25-19. Roxanna Campbell had 10 service points with 8 in a row, leading servers were—Breauna Killgo with 1, Alli Kirkpatrick had 9, Brianna Rodriguez had 8, and Aisly Andrew had 6. We had a couple of kills, but I got so excited with the game, I didn’t write them down. This is going to be a fun group to watch as they continue to learn and play the game.
The Lady Indians are back in action on Monday in Blue Ridge. Games will start at 4:30 with the 7th grade B team and then the 8th grade B team.
These games will have a 30 minute time limit. The 7th grade A game and 8th grade A team will follow, playing the best 2 out of 3.
